Alton Ellis first came to prominence as part of the Ska duo Alton and Eddie and then with Alton Ellis and the Flames. One of the premier stars of the Rock Steady and early Reggae eras, Alton was one of only a handful of Jamaica’s top singers to take a stand against the rude boy movement…as he did with the monster hit single ‘Dance Crasher’. But it was his romantic songs that made him enduringly popular. He was simply amazingly soulful. He also made an important imprint during the fledgling days of Reggae with his socially conscious recordings. One of the all-time great interpreters of a song…Alton Ellis remains a Jamaican legend in his own time.
