What did Bob Marley die of?

My son told me that Bob Marley died of cancer of the big toe. I said that nobody dies of cancer of the big toe!

Aparantly he had melenoma on the big toe and refused to have it amputated, this spread to his lungs, brain etc.

So what would you say he died of? Personally I wouldn’t say cancer of the bit toe.

Daft question I know.

n July 1977, Marley was found to have acral lentiginous melanoma, a form of malignant melanoma, in a football wound - according to widely held urban legend, inflicted by broadcaster and pundit Danny Baker[12] - on his right hallux (big toe). Marley refused amputation, because of the Rastafari belief that the body must be "whole": “Rasta no abide amputation. I don't allow a man to be dismantled.” —From the biography Catch a Fire Marley may have seen medical doctors as samfai (tricksters, deceivers). True to this belief Marley went against all surgical possibilities and sought out other means that would not break his religious beliefs. He also refused to register a will, based on the Rastafari belief that writing a will is acknowledging death as inevitable, thus disregarding the everlasting (or everliving, as Rastas say) character of life. [edit]Collapse and treatment The cancer then metastasized to Marley's brain, lungs, liver, and stomach. After playing two shows at Madison Square Garden as part of his fall 1980 Uprising Tour, he collapsed while jogging in NYC's Central Park. The remainder of the tour was subsequently cancelled. Bob Marley played his final concert at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 23, 1980. The live version of "Redemption Song" on Songs of Freedom was recorded at this show.[13] Marley afterwards sought medical help from Munich specialist Josef Issels, but his cancer had already progressed to the terminal stage. [edit]Death and posthumous reputation While flying home from Germany to Jamaica for his final days, Marley became ill, and landed in Miami for immediate medical attention. He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Florida on the morning of May 11, 1981 at the age of 36. The spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain caused his death. His final words to his son Ziggy were "Money can't buy life."[14] Marley received a state funeral in Jamaica on May 21, 1981 which combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition. He was buried in a chapel near his birthplace with his Gibson Les Paul, a football, a Cannabis bud, a ring that he wore every day that was given to him by the Prince Asfaw Wossen of Ethiopia (eldest son of HIM), and a Bible. A month before his death, he was awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit.

the melanoma actually spread to his lungs and brain and that is what finally caused his death. Sad thing… probably wouldn’t happen in this day and age.

Cancer anywhere in the body can spread and kill. It started in his toe.

Come on people, you cannot OD on ganja!

Usually the type of cancer is loosely defined from where it started.

A person who succumbs to “breast cancer” for instance will not die from the cancer being confined to the breast, but rather the malignant cells spread to vital organs causing the body to shut down.

    Hope that analogy helps…

Bob Marley had cancer like your son said. Because of his Rastafarian beliefs it is said he refused surgery because it would have meant his dreadlocks would be shaved off. Sadly his hair fell out with chemotherapy and he died anyway

I visited his home town, his mausoleum actually. He stepped on a nail and for month he didn’t see a doctor. It caused an really bad infection and eventual the infection and a low immune system turned into cancer.

bob marley injured his toe while playing football(he didn’t shoot himself while stoned as some people have told me!) and he did have a terrible infection, and gangrene. but the reason he didn’t have it amputated is because he knew he had terminal lung cancer and didn’t want to waste any of his last moments in hospital.
in short, he died of lung cancer.

Bob Marley died of cancer. No matter how you look at it, it is cancer that killed him. He was diagnosed with cancer and autopsy proved it to be cancer. Full stop!

It started out in the toe, but since he’s rastafarian he refused to have his toe cut off and it eventually spread.

The summer of 1980 saw the release of Uprising, the final studio effort by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Both the album and its featured single Could You Be Loved were an immediate hit in the UK and throughout most of Europe, as well as having more of an impact in the States than his previous few efforts. An extensive European tour was launched in the second half of the year, following which a US tour was organized; after completing the first two performances at New York’s Madison Square Garden, however, Marley collapsed while jogging and needed to be rushed to the hospital. It was discovered that a cancerous growth identified in his toe in 1977 had been slowly spreading through his vital organs and was now infecting his brain (Marley had refused treatment after the initial diagnosis, since the amputation necessary to remove the growth was in conflict with his Rastafarian beliefs). A final performance was undertaken in Pittsburgh, but the advanced state of his illness forced the singer to cancel the rest of the tour; he was subsequently transported to Bavarian clinic to undergo an experimental, non-toxic treatment. A brief remission was achieved, but in May of 1981 the disease claimed the singer’s life in Miami while he was travelling back to his home in Kingston.
