Jamaican-American Justine Skye Signs with Jay Z’s Roc Nation Label

Jamaican-American Justine Skye is the one of the newest artistes signed by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation recording label. Skye, 21, was born in Brooklyn, New York, and is known by her fans as “The Purple Unicorn” in reference to her purple hair. An R&B crooner, her newly released sing “U Don’t Know” features Wizkid and shows a more confident and refined performance. In an interview with InStyle, she said that her new single definitely uses a Caribbean vibe and that she likes adding that sound to her music. Skye also noted that the tune was written in Jamaica, her parents’ country of origin She commented on her love of jerk chicken and other Jamaican foods like curry goat, rice and peas and ackee and saltfish, which she enjoyed growing up.

Since signing with Roc Nation, which is also the recording home of Rihanna and Willow Smith, she has met Rihanna several times and said “she’s like my sister in my head.” She admitted to being nervous around Beyonce, however. Skye says it is her dream, to collaborate with Drake and Pharell on future recordings. Explaining her purple hair, she said she used to hate the color, but when her mother finally let her dye her hair at the age of 16, she chose the color purple and has stayed with it since then. She said her hair is “always gonna be purple.”
