Q. My Jamaican mother-in-law refuses to call me by my real name. I am a plus size woman who is proud of who I am. She made up a Jamaican nickname and calls me “Fluffy Cakes”. At first it was playful but now it is annoying. – Janet

A: You should have nipped it on the bud at the start. Trying to address it now will come with some conflict that will more than likely suck your husband in the middle to choose who to support, you and his mother. Playful nicknames are a part of Jamaican culture and I am sure your mother-in-law means no harm.
