Jamaica’s Under-12 Karate Athletes Win 29 Medals at US Open in Florida

The Under-12 participants from Jamaica took home 29 medals from the International Sports Karate Association United States Open competition in Orlando, Florida. Siblings Lee-Michael and Khain Henry of Rising Sun Karate and David Richards of Ningen Karate won 10 gold medals, seven silver medals and 12 bronze medals in the sparring, weapons and forms disciplines. Kyoshi Heather Campbell, the chief instructor at Rising Sun, said their performance represents a great future for Jamaica in the martial arts. Campbell expected more medals on the basis of the athletes’ training, but said that some of the competitors “got a little overexcited,” specially those who were competing for the first time. Campbell also noted that more parents should become more involved and dedicated to karate to support the instructors’ efforts. The full list of medalists follows.
