JAMAICA IS red dirt on the bottom of your feet that doesn’t entirely wash off until you go for a swim in the sea.

JAMAICA IS heavy rain beating down on a zinc roof and lulling you to sleep

JAMAICA IS spending your entire summer holidays fishing for “janga” (huge crayfish) and diving off rocks in the nearby river.

JAMAICA IS sucking on a bright yellow suck-suck while walking home from school with your friends.

JAMAICA IS picking at the salt mackerel wrapped in brown paper bag that your mother sent you to buy from the little shop on the corner.

JAMAICA IS sitting in accounting class at St Hilda’s High School for girls and dreaming of a boy over at nearby York Castle High School.

Jamaica is where you see the same “mad man” in Ocho Rios you passed in Brown’s Town last week, only nobody knows how he got there because no bus driver will allow him on the bus.

JAMAICA is where parents send their young children to buy cigarettes and rum and beat the children to scorn if they are caught smoking or taking a sip of the forbidden beverage. Though, if your grandmother sees you make a face upon trying her beer and offers to add condensed milk to “add more taste,” that’s acceptable.

JAMAICA is where you had better not go for a visit if you have “nutten fi caan fram farin.”

JAMAICA is where people think nothing of pelting a dog with rocks. You would think it’s a national sport.

JAMAICA is where I once heard a frustrated mother say, “Bwoy, if yuh guh a sea an’ drown, mi a guh kill yuh!”

JAMAICA is where you can trepass on government land, build your dream house and then dare anyone to turn you in to the authorities.

JAMAICA is where I lived for fifteen and a half years and had never heard a gun shot nor knew what cocaine (or any of its derivatives) looked like. I know, that was 14 years ago…
