Jamaican Hall of Fame: The Honorable Louise "Miss Lou" Bennett-Coverley

Louise Bennet- The Honorable Louise Bennett-Coverley was born on September 7, 1919 in Jamaica, West Indies. She is affectionately known as “Ms. Lou” and has gained International notoriety for her Jamaican Patois Poetry and Storytelling.

Ms. Lou attended Ebenezer and Calabar Elementary Schools. She also was a student at three colleges in Jamaica, Saint Simeon, Excelsior and Friends College which is located in Highgate.

Ms. Lou will be forever remembered as the host of a weekly televised show called “Ring Ding”. It was during the telecast of this show that she was instrumental in reviving the Anancy stories and giving her renditions of Jamaican life. Ms. Lou’s poetic works and theatrical endeavors enabled her to become appointed as a Member of the Order of Merit (OM). Her storytelling abilities as earned the place of one of Jamaica’s living legends.
