Overview

What is now known as the City of Toronto came into being in 1997 with the amalgamation of the cities of North York, East York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, and York. The Toronto Census Metropolitan area (also known as the Greater Toronto Area or GTA) encompasses the cities of Newmarket to the North, Brampton/Caledon to the North West, Milton/Oakville to the South West and Ajax Pickering to the East.
