Jamaica’s Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt finished in third place in the 100-meter final at the World Championships in London on August 5, 2017. Bolt, known the “world’s fastest man,” settled for a bronze medal in his final competition as a professional track athlete. This is the first time in his exceptional career that he has been defeated in the 100-meter final at the World event or at the Olympics. It is the first time Bolt has received a bronze medal in either the 100-meter or 200-meter events. Earlier in the day, Bolt finished second in a semi-final for the first time in his career as well. Justin Gatlin of the United States took the gold medal in the 100-meter with a time of 9.92 seconds, while his teammate Christian Coleman took the silver, clocking 9.94 seconds. Bolt was third with a time of 9.95 seconds.
