6th Annual Fundraising Events, May 26-28, 2017, Florida

Camperdown High School Past Students’ Association, Florida Chapter will host its 16th Annual Fundraising Events on Memorial Weekend, May 26-28, 2017.  The weekend’s theme is “Stronger, Together”.

The weekend’s activities start Friday, May 26 at 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. with a “White Night – Mardi-Gras Fete” at Renaissance Ft. Lauderdale Port Hotel, 1617 SE 17th Street Causeway, Fort Lauderdale, FL; cost is $20/person and includes refreshments, “best mask” competition with music provided by Unique Sound with DJ Marcus and DJ Joe featuring International DJ “Mr. Hype” Richie Pooh.

On Saturday, May 27 at 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. is the formal “Dinner/Dance” at the same venue, cost is $70/person, music will also be provided by Unique Sound with DJ Marcus and DJ Joe.  There will be a presentation by J. F. Brown Scholarship recipient Tumekie Blackwood.

Tumekie is an exemplary student who has managed to skillfully balance academics with sports, a rarity few students have been able to accomplish.  This demonstrated as serving as captain for both Camperdown’s Manning Cup Football team and our School’s Challenge Quiz team.  He has distinguished himself as a stellar performer copping the top prize as our leading goal scorer for the 2016 Manning Cup season.

On entering Camperdown High School in grade seven in 2011, Tumekie, the second of two siblings for Mr. Raphael Blackwood (a single father), had big shoes to fill; his brother Dimitri Blackwood who also attended Camperdown and is now attending the Kettering University, Michigan on a scholarship, had set a high standard for Tumekie to follow.  Cognizant of this reality, he started off with a torrid pace but lost steam in grade eight.  This he quickly regained in grade nine and has not faltered since.

An outstanding performer, Tumekie is well on his way to achieving his passion of becoming a Mechanical or Civil Engineer.  After leaving Camperdown, he plans to continue his studies at Temple University, Pennsylvania.

The weekend culminates on Sunday, May 28 with a picnic at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, 3109 E Sunrise Boulevard, Pavilion 3, Fort Lauderdale, at 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.; cost is $20/adult, $10/child under 12 and also includes refreshments.  Fun and games for adults and children will be provided.
