Marlon James, who won the 2015 Man/Booker Prize for Fiction in London for his novel “A Brief History of Seven Killings,” will give the 2016 Bob Marley Lecture at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in St. Andrew on February 12, 2016. According to Dr. Sonjah Stanley-Niaah, the head of the UWI Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Reggae Studies Unit, the selection of James to give the lecture was an obvious choice. The Bob Marley Lecture celebrates the birth, work and fame of Marley, as well as the achievements made by Jamaican music, she said. The commemorative lecture is also meant to showcase the work of scholars who highlight Jamaican culture. James fits this category perfectly; his book includes a description of the attempted assassination of Marley. James made history when he won the Man/Booker Prize as he is the first Jamaican to do so. Stanley-Niaah noted that it was “easy” to get James to agree to give the lecture because, as well as being an alumnus of UWI, he was scheduled to be in Jamaica at the right time. The Bob Marley Lecture is part of the yearly celebration of Reggae Month.
