Day 189 of 365 Things to Do, See & Eat in Jamaica – Take a Mountain Drive into Geological Time

For another way to view the scenic wonders of Jamaica, take a drive from Papine into the John Crow Mountains. You can see Kingston from the heights, travel through New Castle Fort and make stops on the way to Holywell to do some geological exploring: look at the exposed rock faces with a magnifying glass and check out the lichens growing on the rocks, some of which rival orchids in color and complexity. Just off the road leading to the Starlight Hotel and Space there are the remains of an old silver mine that still hosts veins of the precious metal. Park the car at John Crow Peak and watch the “John Crows” gliding on the thermals in the panoramic view over the Buff River Valley. If you need refreshment, Blue Mountain Coffee can be found nearby.

In case you missed any of the past “365 Things to Do, See and Eat in Jamaica“, here they are all together.
