    Re: Getting ready for IDITAROD!!!

Nan, I noticed that Damion's schedule for this season is very limited - many of the locations have not been included -even yours was not listed

Trops - there are a couple races nearer to you - like Cannington etc that you could take in (dress reeeeeeal warm) Nanook interviewed him last year and got some great pix!

      Re: Getting ready for IDITAROD!!!

I think Damion is just arriving around now. Short season for him this year! Ken has been out and doing well, so the dogs are ready! I had to look high and low and did finally find the sprint races on March 3rd & 4th in Duluth. I plan to be there if I don't have to work.

Today is the Beargrease start so sled dog fever is on high alert at this point!

Too bad for Damian's schedule... he is too many hours away from where I live for me to even consider attending.

Thanks SistahD! I would imagine he will show up at Snowflake in Duluth in early March as well. I hope so anyway! It would be a week or two after that last weekend scheduled in Canada.

                  Re: Robb's schedule for 2011

Wow! I must say, this documentary about Newton and the JDT was well worth seeing. The producers really captured a lot of very 'real' moments not only highlighting Newton's development and progression through training and the actual Yukon Quest, but also many personal moments, info which I had not realized before... very touching background story as well which had a great impact on me. Big up Newton's grandma!!!

Having seen the doc, with a lot of coverage including Hans Gatt and his assistant and their mentoring of Newton during training and the actual race, I am pleased that Newton is now under the more comfortable and patient guidance of Lance MacKay.

If you missed this, and do have access to the Outdoor Life Network... they repeat programming a lot, so I am sure this will replay over the next few days... watch for the Underdog!

I'm sorry I missed the documentary! I don't have that channel but sooner or later you'd think it will be online. Thanks for the update, your mentioning the switch in trainers is intriguing! Lance is the bomb though, Newton couldn't possibly be in better hands.

I will try find out more, I did notice during the 'credits' that the documentary was funded by a variety of grants (from the Canadian govt)

My heart really went out to Newton during this feature. Call me crazy, but I don't think there was a lot of chemistry between Hans and Newt -not like what we have seen with Lance in the past year. I chalked it up to Hans' 'European' background/mentality - to be honest, he and his assistant seemed quite miserable towards the young man, and Newt certainly felt it. I strongly believe that had he linked with Lance for Yukon Quest - he would have placed in at least the top 6 and would have done much better at Iditarod too!

This was really a heartwarming story, switching back and forth (from Jamaica to the icebox many times). It took a lot of guts for Newton to admit he has very little education, can hardly read... was raised by his wonderful Grandmother, father abandoned them, and mother not much better. He is a young man with a lot of hurt in his short life, and for him to leave his circumstances, and tackle such an enormous task, takes a lot of strength. Towards the end, during one of his dialogues, tears poured down his cheeks, and you really have to wonder sometimes how some parents can treat a child. Makes me want to hug my son.
