Louise Bennett, who was the first black person to be admitted to RADA, became one of the best-loved entertainers in the Caribbean, renowned for bringing Jamaican dialect to the stage.

Bennett received a British Council Scholarship to study at RADA in 1948. Shortly after she was admitted, she was offered a job with the Caribbean service of the BBC. She went on to work with repertory companies in Coventry, Huddersfiled and Amersham.

On her return to Jamaica she taught drama to youth and adult groups. And she performed regularly across the Caribbean, where she was known as Miss Lou, reciting poems in Jamaican dialect. Her research and folklore creations have helped to save much Jamaican folk material from extinction. She has also lectured extensively in the US and the UK on Jamaican folklore and has received numerous honours for her work.

          Bennett lives in Canada.

"My auntie say it bother her every time she hear people call fi we language, corruption of the English language. But should call the English language corruption of the Norman, French and the Latin and the Greek. What them say, English was derived from. You hear that, English derive and we corrupt. Not na go so. We derive too. We derive."
