One of my old hobbies is spelunking. Something I just never thought of in Jamaica. Where can I do this? Do you know If all the equipment is necessary or is it a walk-in cavern? george

              Thanks Ackee,
I doubt I'll get up there in January, but maybe next time. That is the thing about Jamaica; every time I go I'm thinking about what I want to see next time. I've been to Dunn's river and YS falls. This time I want to see Mayfield falls , Lovers Leap and perhaps Nine Mile. Another time I'll see some of the Blue Mountains ( and maybe reich falls).

                Geocox:
Green Grotto has a structured path which you have to stick to.The entire cave system is over fivemiles in lenght however the tour will only take you up to about 3/4 of a mile. I do think with the proper permission you may be able to go spelunking throughout the entire system though, provide your own equipment for that. Jamaica is littered with hundred of caves, I am NOT exaggerating!...in fact I live beside one in the Hellshire hills of St Catherine. The Cockpit country is a good place to start if you are a serious spelunker, again you have to carry your own equipment and get in touch with a local guide...make sure you are really experience in these things.

Two other walk-in-caverns coming to mind are the Nonsuch Caves (Portland) and the Two Sister Caves (Hellshire,St Catherine)..the latter is fairly small and is not officially open to the public, but if you wish to take the risk, can still be viewed. There are others, just not remembering what they are named right now.

                    Re: Jamaica-more than a beach!

When we were in JA for our honeymoon, almost 10 years ago now (!), we stayed in Ironshore and on our way to Dunn's, we stopped at a cave. There were many steps down and there was water at the bottom which the guide said we could swim in (I passed because he was talking about brackish water and albino eels..yuk). At one point they turned off the lights and it was PITCH dark.

Where were we? Was that Green Grotto?

Ackee, I am not as serious about spelunking as I once was. Dry caves were my interest, however I would be interested If I can walk in as Ohliz said. Is Green Grotto in the Westmoreland area? If so how do I get there?

                            Spelunking is exploring caves.

                            I love this topic.
                            How about:

                            YS Falls
Enjoying a roadside Jerk Chicken and a Stripe
                            The vista from Lovers Leap
Going to the market in Sav
Freshly baked warm bread in Port Antonio
Picking bananas straight off the tree
and eating them on the northeast coast.

Playing dominoes on a sunny afternoon

Jamaica's so much more than a beach.

went to Green Grotto - definetely worth the trip - it's in Runaway Bay (I think, at least very near by) and there's a jerk stand a bar right across the road. yum...I'm tasting it now. Next time I want to get to Portland, take the Rio Grande trip and Reich Falls (I've seen Dunn's enough now).
