Gov't admits to possible tourism fallout due to tax package

The Government is admitting that the tourism sector could suffer some fallout from its revised tax package.

The Finance Minister yesterday reduced the tax on hotel rooms but introduced a fee of 20 US dollars on passengers travelling to Jamaica on tickets originating outside of the country. In addition, tax free privileges enjoyed by the sector will be discontinued.

Tourism Minister, Dr. Wykeham McNeil, says the passenger tax will have some negative implications.

However, he says it's the best option available to the Government. “Anywhere you increase revenue there is going to be challenges. What we did was to sit down with industry partners to go through all the possibilities to raise the revenue we needed, and for us to determine which would have the least impact on us.”

A falla fashion dem following airlines from other countries. I bought a ticket on VS JFK/LHR and the government taxes and fees amounted to more than the actual airfare - over $400 for taxes and fees - most of this goes to the British government. Just paid $132 taxes and fees for a ticket on Jet Blue from JFK/KIN that cost $281.00. I am personally ticked off about these taxes and so-called fees. I personally only go to Jamaica for funerals and all a my family dead off just a few left.

u have a point. unless its pointed out like it is now i think the average traveler would just assume its "airport taxes" god knows the taxes are already disgusting. as smaddy pointed out u a pay at least 50% of the seat fare in tax.
