JTW EP#166 | Jamaican Expat, Derrick Rowe on Falling in Love & Raising a Family in Haiti

What is it like to be a Jamaican living in Haiti?

Haiti first came on Derrick’s radar after the massive earthquake that devastated the island in 2010. He applied to be a volunteer through his employer, Digicel, who had sent people to assist in the restoration efforts. That initial trip fell through, though after a disappointing work setback a couple years later, he eventually made it to Haiti.

News reports and warnings from friends and family were cause for concern, but happily, Haiti was nothing like everyone said it would be. The people are warm and friendly, the culture is rich and deep, and the island is beautiful.

13 years later, Derrick is married to a Haitian and raising a family there.

In this episode of Jamaicans to the World, Derrick shares his first-hand perspective on how he navigates two cultures as a Jamaican expat living, growing a family, and working in Haiti.
