How do I rid my home in Jamaica of squatters?

QUESTION: Dear Legal Wiz,

I have squatters and I need to get rid of them. These persons are not our tenants nor of the persons who sold the house to us. There is a sale on the house, and we need them off before it is sold.
There are at least 20 individual persons, and they are not known to me. None of them are legal owners nor tenants.

What are some of the things that can be done to keep the individual squatters or others from re-occupying the property? We need to know in case the current sale being negotiated flops.

Sony Coombs

RESPONSE: Dear Sony Coombs,
Here are the steps by the team

A. STAGE ONE:

1. site visit
NOTE: registration of power of attorney is needed to establish proper permission at all material times!
2. assessment of property status with contractor, address occupants, investigate, establish their status and intent
3. submit report to you
4. draft, serve notice to quit as necessary
5. follow up through courts as necessary

A. STAGE TWO:

Preventing reentry by squatters in general can be done in a number of ways. Management involving regular visits is a must. You can also arrange for proper occupancy.

All the best!
