Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson Wins 100-Meter Breaststroke Equaling the World Record

Jamaican Alia Atkinson won the 100-meter breaststroke event today (August 26) at the FINA/Airweave Swimming World Cup in France in 1.02.36 minutes. Her time equaled the world record for the distance. Atkinson had the second-fastest qualifying time with 1.04.89 minutes, following the fastest qualifying time attained by America Katie Meilli who clocked 1.04.49. In the final of the event, however, Atkinson displayed a very strong performance in the 25-meter Lodyssa swimming pool, equaling her own record, which she set in Doha in 2014. Atkinson had a reaction time of 0.63 seconds from Lane Five and clocked 29.33 seconds at the half-way mark of the distance; she held her form until the end to obtain a comfortable win. Mielli came in second with a time of 1.03.52 minutes, with Yuliya Efimova of Russia coming in third with 1.04.14.
