The monument to Rt. Excellent Nanny of the Windward Maroons was installed in 1999. It was designed by Compass Workshop Ltd. A critical element of the theme of this Kingston monument is the sound that is created by its main vertical structure. The forms of the monument are given voice by the sound of the abeng, which is produced by kinetic action of the wind blowing against the face of the figure. The abeng’s sound was critical in the Maroons efforts to defeat the British, so its inclusion at the monument is especially appropriate. The secondary structures symbolize Nanny surrounded by Maroon Guerrilla fighters.
