Jamaica’s Naschelle Hird of Annotto Bay has won the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Global Leadership Award (GLA) for 2016. Hird recently graduated from Immaculate Conception High School for Girls in Kingston. She received her award in Communication and Digital Media Studies. Hird was thrilled to receive the award, noting that to say the award “means the world” to her was an understatement. She said she was honored to have been chosen from among the many students around the world who applied. The entrance scholarship award is given to seven outstanding students at UOIT each year in recognition of their exceptional achievements in academics, leadership and community involvement through their years in high school. Hird’s Global Leadership Award is valued at $72,000, or $18,000 a year for four years.
