Conversation with Jamaican Singer, Kim Kelly

Miss. Kimberley Kelly is a Jamaican born artist who moved to Canada at the tender age of 13. She grew up in Brampton Ontario, where she spent the next 5 years honing her God given talent and developing her strong work ethic. During which time people often perceived her as singing more than she actually spoke. At 18 years old, Kim was confident and ready so she introduced herself to the world. She was well received: now at 24, she is driven, focused and determined to continue her musical growth. Since she hails from Jamaica, Kimberley’s music is heavily influenced by reggae. The end result is a timeless sound, a sensuous marriage of harmony mixed with a vocal prowess that holds you captivated until the last note is sung. Here is our conversation with Kim Kelly.

Tell us about your background and how did you get started in the entertainment industry?
– Well I was born and raised in Jamaica until I was about 13 I moved to Canada to live. Being raised in Portmore the lifestyle was a big big change for me but I found peace and comfort in music. Ididn’t started thinking about singing professionally until i was 16 which is when I started writting. It wasn’t until 18 when I recorded my first rnb record and began doing shows here in Toronto. That was my beginning as Kim Kelly.

How would you describe your sound?
– My sound is soul reggae. I have a way of changing my sound depending on the type of song I’m singing or the type of feeling and energy I’m bringing to my audience. It doesn’t matter what I choose to write about my aim to allow to listeners to feel it.

Tell us about your new song “”Fall In Love”? Did you write the song? What was your inspiration to write the song?
– “Fall in Love” is very close to my heart. I wrote that song about a year and half ago and at that moment life led the words and melody to me. As I heard the riddim I knew it was for me and I did what my heart told me to do. It said “write kim, WRITE” lol.

You have a few singles out there. When can we expect your album to be released?
– Well at the moment we are getting ready to start my EP which will be produced by UIM producer Anju Blax. This EP will be the best of Kim Kelly  and will be ready for later on this year.

Do you remember the first time you ever got on a stage to perform? Where was it and what did it feel like?

Do you remember the first time you ever got on a stage to perform? Where was it and what did it feel like?
– Well living in Jamaica and even when I moved to Canada I been a church girl. I use to sing in the choir so I was very familiar with being on stage. As a solo artist I’ve always done school talent shows until I started doing my own setting. I actually can’t remember the first first time being on stage as Kim Kelly, very long time ago lol.

What projects are you working on right now?
Right our main focus as a team is my Ep. Other from that I have a song coming out on the Cute Bubble Riddim by suku which is a all female juggle. We also released “Fall in Love” video so we are now focused on promoting and pushing this video.

If you were stuck on a deserted island and given the choice of 5 songs to put on your mp3 which artists would it be?
– WOW amazing question.  If I had an option of 5 songs to have with me they would have to a Romain Virgo song, Alaine, Mary j Blige, K michelle and a gospel song lol. I actually cannot pick 5 songs but I can choose  couple artists I am in love with.

Something about me most people would be surprise to know
– lol one thing about me is I hate dressing myself. I would choose someone dressing me any day. The idea of putting outfits together in not my best talent.
