St. Catherine High School Alumni Association, North East 6th Annual Awards Banquet

St. Catherine High School Alumni Association, North East held their 6th Annual Scholarship and Award Banquet themed “Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers” in Astoria, Queens at the Astoria World Manor on October 17, 2015.  The event began at 8 pm and ended at 2 am.  The mission of SCHS Alumni Association, North East is fundraising to provide scholarships for students that attend St Catherine High School that are in need of financial assistance in order to remain in school.  The ticket cost to the event was $100 which was donated to the cause.

The honorary guest speaker was sports head coach and basketball legend Eric Stewart, who is an alumnus of SCHS.  There were two presentations to two honorees, one to Dr. Trevor Dixon who received the “Community of Service” Award and one to Professor Karl A. Mitchell who received the “Outstanding Alumni” Award. There was a presentation of scholarships from the scholarship committee to Altisha Hylton who received the 2015 Scholarship Award and Yemalla Edwards who received the Special Scholarship Award.  Dinner was served from 10:15pm to 11:15 pm and the menu included selections such as fresh melon, jerk chicken, salmon w/garlic sauce, eggplant rollatini and prime ribs along with potatoes au gratin, string beans and carrots and dessert with coffee and tea.  There was a raffle of beautiful gift baskets and cash rewards.

Professor Karl A. Mitchell who has also authored the book, “Afrika’s Struggle: His Experiential Journey” donated $5.00 from each sale of his book during the banquet to support the Alumni’s mission. Professor Mitchell has extended a promotion to donate $3.00 from each sale of “Afrika’s Struggle: His Experiential Journey” from any SCHS website until December 25th, 2015 to continue to support the mission. There was an interlude of music from Robert Graham, lead singer of Planet Love Band and a live performance from Gareth Shelton aka Red Fox with Screechy Dan and the night ended with dancing to Inner Roots Sounds with DJ Shorty.  The banquet was sponsored by Jamaicans Abroad Helping Jamaicans At Home, Golden Krust Bakery, All-time Printing, Dr. Karren Dunkley, Colleen Rose DaCosta, VP Records, Gareth “Red Fox” Shelton, HBS Services,  Fern Gully Landscaping, Karl A. Mitchell, Xavier Murphy of www.Jamaicans.com, Erwin Claire, OD, Karl Haughton of Caribbean Current Magazine,  Patty World, Grass Kissers, USA, INC., Mark Crawford, Esq., Jasmine Clarke-Barnes and Durpatty Misir.
