REVIEW: “Cock Tales Shame on Me”, Raw and Revealing Play with Jamaican Debra Ehrhardt

Bitingly honest, Jamaican-born Debra Ehrhardt’s one-woman show “Cock Tales Shame on Me!” reveals the truth about growing up female in any culture, through her own personal experiences.

We have all been through some of the experiences she uncovers, in some form or another. Whether it was unwanted advances, sexual abuse, a cheating partner, or the sih but no sih attitude, it all comes to life during Ehrhardt’s 75 minute unforgettable performance.

She takes us on a journey through her life, from 9 years old to adulthood, painting a picture of how ‘cock tales’ marked her life. From the first ‘show me yours and I’ll show you mine’ experience to the moment of revelation about one’s own sexuality that comes with maturity, Ehrhardt honesty slaps us in the face with its raw truth.

A common experience for young girls, and boys, Ehrhardt’s emotional depiction of the trusted Jamaican community pastor molesting her at age 10 raised some eyebrows, but also revealed knowing glances. This is something most in the Caribbean community do not talk about because of the shame and guilt it stirs.

But, the Jamaican actress goes even further, highlighting some of her most personal ‘cock tales’ experiences. From her religious upbringing to her cheating grandfather and religiously obsessed ex-husband to her coming of age through sex, we travel with her while facing our own demons through the familiar stories.

A must see, “Cock Tales Shame on Me” continues at the Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale until Sunday, October 30.
