Jamaican swim champion Alia Atkinson has added to her impressive wins by taking the gold medal at the 2015 FINA Swimming World Cup held in Doha, Qatar. Atkinson defeated Molly Hannis of the United States in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 30.55 seconds. This was the fifth fastest time recorded in 2015. Atkinson’s latest victory represents her 32nd gold medal in her history of World Cup competitions. As a finalist, Atkinson received $2,500 in Doha, making her overall earnings before the final competition in Dubai of $26,750. Atkinson was also named one of Essence Magazine’s 10 Badass Black Female Athletes Who Make Us Proud,” one of only two non-American women to make the list. In giving Atkinson this honor, Essence noted that, in addition to winning championships, she also uses her talent for good, being involved with the International Swimming Hall of Fame to encourage minority children to participate in swim culture.
