Jamaica is where you wear khakis to school and epaulettes on the shoulders to tell what school you are from. Jamaica is where you learned your first cricket skills with a palm branch bat and a bauxite covered tennis ball. Jamaica is where you had hot patties for school lunch ( until they cut the school lunch program). Jamaica is where you made the best catapults from guava tree wood and cycle tube. Jamaica is where you remembered to slip a prep book down the back of your trousers before you had to see the headmaster for a caning. Jamaica is the smell of charcoal fire along the roadside in the evenings. Jamaica is looking out the bus window and seeing Joe Hut, Harry Watch, Axe And Adze, Ramgoat Cave, Skull Point, Rest Store, Devil’s Race Course, Prickle Pole or maybe even Me No Se You No Come. Jamaica is waiting for the Lada cab under a tamarind tree and carrying home your bread in a lada bag.

Jamaica is listening to radio programs such as “Life in Hopeful Village”, “Dulcimina” and “A Time to Remember.” In “Hopeful Village” there was a young man named Baldwin and things that happened to him and in “Dulcimina”, she was tormented by “Presserfoot.” How did she escape that man? Also, in “A Time to Remember,” there was a character named “Joshie Barnett” who was living at the Barnett home. Was he a slave or a member of the family? Please let me know what happened to him. Were they on JBC or RJR? and hey!..who remembers “Teenage Dance Party?” E-mail me at oohmesohenry-#hotmail.com

cane and play football only to get a “strapping” in your palms from “mr. richardson” the only male teacher at school. then get another “whipping” from your parents when they are told what you did. only to do it again.

“ja, is” hiding from school 1/2 a day on friday to go swim in

then monday morning you and all your friends get a whipping in the principal’s office, then all the girls laugh at you.

ja is wearing white socks at glenmuir (to show-off) only

different from everyone else, which I love because I could
teach other people about my heritage and me. I miss my

sometimes I would tell them I hate them when they wold mess with my stuff but I do

Jamaica is where I was known as a pickeney who didn’t
want to have fassy fassy foot but who thank goodness
did not have picky picky head and who totally enjoyed
playing dandy-shandy in the school yard before walking
home for lunch and eating food that is still longed
for after all these years- Satisfy my soul== ALWAYS a Jamaican.

Jamaica is where adults will call you a “pickney” until your 30 years-old.

TRADE WINDS
And my mother and her mother’s mother, walked under duppy tree, praying loudly to Jesus that ghosts are not real.
Walk fast to the beach girl, you must get your feet wet, you don’t swim, you sink – No?
Remember the ghost?
Left her robe belt on the door, some say she came back to get it…after she drowned, before they found her body.
Remember? Pray – don’t forget, ‘me love’.
Yes, fear is my maiden mother’s name.
Fear the unknown for eternity sake
Jamaican trade winds bring big bugs, man.
Like tourists I think.
Hide in the tunnel, you’ll be safe in here, no I won’t let anyone go in to bother you,
no one will take you back to that place.
Yes, I’ll bring you patties, some salt pork,
saw some ripe persimmon too.
Granny Lyze made jerk chicken,
You will need something to drink.
A bit of rum to take the edge off?
And a big jug of water. Fresh from the well.
You will see,
You won’t be alone, we will be upstairs.
The stones are cool down here.
Just watch for the duppy.
Give him a broad smile;
that will show him who not to mess with.
Keep those eyes open.
In the dark here,
Shhh, I hear the wheels of a buggy coming up over the hill.
Be quiet, now.
“Me Love”–
