Raul Pratt a.k.a. Lil Dread is owner the website soundsystem.cl. It is a website dedicated a Web site dedicated to spreading reggae/dancehall in Chile and Latin America. This week we talk to Lil Dread about reggae music in Chile. 

What is the reggae scene in Chile?
The reggae scene in Chile, has been strengthening in recent years and there is a  new new interest in dance hall. The younger people have come to know and rediscover the classics, in addition to Chile has a few high quality reggae bands, since the rise of band Gondwana. Reggae is playing an important role in Chile. It is reflected in the group Gondwana being played on local radio stations. Reggae is sometimes play on music channels TV. Many musicians from other genre are also trying reggae music. All reggae needs is the support of private enterprise to enhance our efforts.

What about the ska scene?
The Chile ska is more associated with punk scene to Reggae, it may be strange, but it is.

What first drew your attention to Reggae?
For over 12 years I hear reggae, the first thing that attracted me was the harmony and how they could deliver a really deep message in an entertaining way.

What was the first reggae song you heard?
Bob Marley,Natural Mystique

Who and what are your influences?
I would say first HIM Haile Selassie I because he was a great communicator, then Malcom X,Michael Rose and Bob Marley.

What style of reggae is played often in your country? [Dancehall,Lovers Rock, etc.. ] What style most fans prefer?
Reggae dancehall and club are aware that more people prefer this style of music.

Does the fact that reggae is English and Patois a barrier?
I think that much of the mystique of reggae is that it can break down the barriers that people can impose and the language is also one of those sites like ours are trying to publish the lyrics to songs with this amazing world open to the general public.

Is Reggae mainstream and is played on the radio? Videos on Television?
On the radio if fully but at this time in Chile there is no space dedicated to music TV.

How is Reggae influencing your culture?
But growing reggae scene still remains as an alternative and could not be positioned completely in the mass media.

If someone traveled to visit his home and wanted to hear reggae music what to do?
The musical offering is varied and to be known Internet to become a major platform.

How would you describe your country’s reggae sound and development?
The sound of the Chilean bands reminds me of the early Jamaican reggae not say it’s for anything fancy. Eventually it will achieve its own distinctive sound.

What are some of the names of local popular music? Who would the top 5 artists?
Clearly this list should start with Gonwana other names of bands are Kingo roots,Jjam monkey king, animal reggae, roots Makumba plus many lead singers who do dance hall reggae.

Question: How did you get interested in Reggae?
In 1994 I bought my first reggae cassette. It was a band from Argentina called, CAFRES. That began my interest in  reggae.

Who is your favorite Reggae Artist?
Of all the times Bob Marley no doubt.

Where do you think Reggae will be in 10 years in your country?
Reggae is positioning to be a force. In Chile we have many new bands but the problem is the lack of support from private enterprise. The lack of support keeps the music underground right now.

Do you think there is anything preventing Reggae flourishing in Chile?
I think that nothing can prevent the movement to grow for example Gonwana has a long history in spite of the difficult national average of reggae fans.

How are you involved in Reggae?
Through the Web Page www.soundsystem.cl.  I have to attend presentations by local artists and also I have to keep people abreast of international
developments.

In some countries you may see people wearing a Jamaican-style hat with fake dreadlocks attached when they attend reggae concerts and other events. Do you see everything you see in your country?
No, that is not in Chile.

Have you ever been to Jamaica?
No but, I could go soon.

Do you have many / any Jamaican people living in Chile?
Yes, there are some people who came from Jamaica, not many.

Do you eat food from Jamaica? Like what?
Yes, there is a restaurant that serves Jamaican food in Santiago. Green Papaya Chutney is my favorite.

Pregunta: ¿Cuál es la escena reggae en Chile?
Respuesta: La escena reggae en chile, se ha ido afianzando en los últimos años y cada ves es redescubierta por nuevos interesados en esta tendencia, de la mano del dance hall las personas mas jóvenes han podido conocer y redescubrir a los clásicos, además de ser chile cuna de bandas reggae de gran calidad,
desde el surgimiento de gondwana a la fecha el reggae esta teniendo un rol importante en chile, se refleja en las agrupaciones  sonando en las radios locales o en el uso de temas musicales nacionales como música incidental en los canales de TV, a pesar de una aparente endogamia musical dado que los mismos músicos militaban en diferentes agrupaciones, hoy por hoy están surgiendo nuevas agrupaciones con propuestas interesantes y variadas, es en este sentido que medios como el nuestro pretenden participar dando soporte a todas estas bandas nuevas, solo falta el apoyo de la empresa privada para potenciar nuestros esfuerzos.

Pregunta: ¿Qué tal la escena ska?
El ska en chile esta más asociado a la escena del punk que a la del reggae, puede que sea algo extraño, pero así es.

Pregunta: Lo primero que llamó su atención sobre Reggae?
Desde hace mas de 12 años que escucho reggae, lo primero que me atrajo fue la armonía y como se podía entregar un mensaje realmente profundo de manera entretenida.

Pregunta: ¿Quiénes y cuáles son tus influencias?
debo decir en primer lugar HIM hAile Selassie soy comunicador audiovisual por esto malcom x y otros grandes oradores en lo musical diría que Mikel
rose y bob marley, partiendo por el reggae y  he sido muy influenciado por el dance hallen el ultimo tiempo.

Pregunta: ¿Qué estilo de reggae se juega a menudo en su país? [Dance hall,Los amantes Rock, etc. Consciente] ¿Qué estilo de la mayoría de los aficionados prefieren?
el reggae club y el dance hall conciente son las tendencias que mas gente mueven ósea que la gente prefiere.

Pregunta: ¿El hecho de que el reggae es el Inglés y patois una barrera?
creo que gran parte de la mística del reggae es que puede derribar las barreras que las personas podemos imponer y el idioma es una de esas además sitios como el nuestro tratamos de publicar las canciones con sus letras para abrirle este mundo impresionante al publico general.

Pregunta: ¿Es la corriente principal de Reggae y se juega en la radio no? Videos sobre el Televisión?
En las radios si totalmente pero en este momento en chile no hay un espacio en TV dedicado a la música.

Pregunta: ¿Cómo se Reggae que influyen en su cultura?
aunque creciente la escena reggae aun permanece como alternativa y no se ha podido posicionar del todo en los medios masivos.

Pregunta: Si alguien viaja a visitar a su casa y quería escuchar música reggae lo que tienen que hacer?
la oferta musical es variada y para darse a conocer Internet se a convertido en una importante plataforma.

Pregunta: ¿Cómo describiría el sonido reggae de su país y el desarrollo?
el sonido de las bandas chilenas me recuerda el early reggae de jamaica no diría que es para nada sofisticado pero creo que se proyecta de gran manera y que lograra en algún momento un sonido propio y distintivo de esta zona.

Pregunta: ¿Cuáles son algunos de los nombres de la música popular local?
¿Quién sería el 5 mejores artistas? claramente esta lista debe comenzar con gonwana otros nombres de bandas pueden ser kingo roots, rey mono jam, animal reggae, makumba roots además de muchos cantantes solistas de dance hall.

Pregunta: ¿Cómo llegaste a interesarte en el Reggae?
En el 1994 compre mi primer casette de reggae aun lo conservo es de la banda argentina LOS CAFRES con eso comenzó  mi interés por reggae.

Pregunta: ¿Quién es tu artista Reggae favorito?
De todos los tiempos bob marley sin lugar a duda.

Pregunta: ¿Dónde crees que será Reggae en 10 años? Y en su
país?
El reggae a nivel internacional se esta posicionando cada ves con mas fuerza, En chile tenemos muchas bandas nuevas pero el problema es la falta de
apoyo de la empresa privada y de las disqueras esto ase que todo esfuerzo sea solo a nivel under groudn.

Pregunta: ¿Cree usted que hay Reggae nada impide floreciente para usted y sus compañeros artistas ?
Creo que nada puede impedir que el movimiento crezca por ejemplo gonwana tiene una larga trayectoria a  pesar de lo difícil del medio nacional

Pregunta: ¿Cómo usted está involucrado en el Reggae?
A través de la Pág. Web www.soundsystem.cl tengo que asistir a las presentaciones de los artistas locales y además debo mantener al tanto a
las personas de las novedades internacionales.

Pregunta: En algunos países es posible que vea la gente que lleva un sombrero estilo jamaicano con rastas falsas adjunto cuando asisten a conciertos de reggae y otros eventos. Hacer usted ver todo lo que usted ve en su país?
no, eso no se ve en chile.

Pregunta: ¿Alguna vez has estado en Jamaica?
No he podido ir aun

Pregunta: ¿Tiene muchos / cualquier pueblo de Jamaica que viven allí?
Si, hay algunas personas que llegaron de jamaica, no son muchos.

Pregunta: ¿Usted come comida de Jamaica? ¿Cómo qué?
Si, hay un restauran en santiago que sirve comida de Jamaica Chutney de Papaya verde es mi favorito
