Retired NFL Player Builds School in His Mother’s Jamaican Hometown

Stephen Tulloch, retired National Football League linebacker, believes in giving back. He recently completed a project in his mother’s hometown of Little London in Jamaica: building a school. A 2003 graduate of Killian High School, Tulloch says his mother means everything to him. While he was growing up, she was an inspiration to him, always ready to give to others even when they had little to give When he was in a position to give back, he went to work with the Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation, participating in a three-day construction of the Little London Infant School. The school’s students range from pre-kindergarten through age seven, and is located a mile from his mother’s childhood home. Much of Tulloch’s family still lives in Jamaica, and although he currently lives in Miami, he found going back to the island to build the school was “amazing.” The new school will be able to house 125 children. It features running water, a kitchen, and indoor bathrooms. These things are not always available in schools in the area. The five classrooms will also have desks and supplies, plus an outdoor area for play. Tulloch retired from the NFL in April 2017. He has strongly supported youth programs and causes throughout his 11-year professional career. He launched the Steven Tulloch Foundation in 2009 while he was playing for the Tennessee Titans and helped underprivileged children in Nashville through hosting camps and providing educational materials. Tulloch also created Operation 55 when he played with the Detroit Lions, adopting city schools and providing students with books, technology, supplies and dental care. Tulloch hosted the annual Evening of Hope event while he was in Detroit to provide aid to breast cancer survivors. He published his first children’s book in 2016. Working with author Maria Dismondy, Tulloch’s book “The Little Linebacker” is available to school students around the country to teach them how hard work and determination can lead them to accomplish their goals.
