The 2015 edition of the Reggae Marathon is scheduled for December 5, and some 2,500 individuals are expected to participate in the 15th anniversary staging of the event. The Reggae Marathon includes a half-marathon and a 10-k event as well. According to tourism experts, the Marathon has historically boosted sports tourism in Jamaica. Organized by Kingston’s Jamdammers Running Club partnering with the Jamaica Tourist Board, the 2015 staging will be “bigger and better,” anticipating a record number of participants from more than 36 nations worldwide. New to the event in 2015 will be participants from Suriname and Saudi Arabia. According to Dr. Wykeham McNeill, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, this event illustrates the potential benefits of sports tourism for the island.
