A Celebration of Life for former Miss Jamaica Universe, Shakira Martin will be held at The Boardwalk (across from Hellshire Beach) on August 25th, 2016. The celebration will begin at 6:00 pm and end at 8:00 pm.

Shakira Martin won Miss Jamaica Universe 2011 and used her crown as a platform to raise awareness for people affected by sickle cell anemia. She represented Jamaica at the Miss Universe pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The organizers of the Miss Universe Jamaica contest, have announced that this year’s coronation show on August 27th, 2016 will be dedicated to Shakira Martin.

A funeral was held for Martin at the Holy Family Episcopal Church in Miami Gardens, Florida, on August 12th, 2016.

Martin, passed away in South Florida on August 3rd, 2016 after succumbing to a lifelong battle with sickle cell anaemia. She started the organization Shaks Hope which was dedicated to awareness and education about sickle cell disease. Martin also worked with the Sickle Cell Foundation for many years.
