Located near Port Maria in St. Mary Parish, the forts was built in 1759 and named for General George Haldane, who was governor of Jamaica at the time. The fort protected Port Maria’s harbor from raids by the Spanish and used as a garrison meant to control the slaves and working classes of the parish. The guns are positioned on a hill and face out to sea, and the fort offers an expansive view of the port of St. Mary.
