Jamaican ludo (or ludy / ludi) is a board game for two, three or four players using two dice and 16 counters. Taking turns, players race each other around the board, trying to be the first one to get all their counters on the home base. The game is thought to have originated in India, but the Jamaican game has its own rules. Boards and counters are often home-made and feature intricate designs and vibrant colors. It represents part of a culture that is slowly disappearing, but you can still find opportunities to play on the island. Playing games that Jamaicans love and trash-talking will help you learn some Jamaican patois while thoroughly enjoying yourself. The game is the source of the saying, “Bornless, Heavenless, knock off you head, run fi yu life.”
