Day 232 of 365 Things to Do, See & Eat in Jamaica – Take a Tour of a Bauxite Mine

If you’re tired of the typical tourist activities, you may want to consider taking a tour of a Jamaican bauxite mine, which can be arranged by Alcan Jamaica in Mandeville. Alumina Jamaica, a subsidiary of ALCAN, was the first aluminum firm to operate in Jamaica. It acquired the bauxite reserves in the 1940s and started building its Kirkvine plant late in 1950, with actual mining starting in 1952. The plant expanded over the years to process the large bauxite deposits it acquired in St. Ann. The tours display the mining and transportation of the bauxite via large dump trucks, cable-belt conveyor, and aerial ropeway. As only a small part of the property is used for mining at one time, the firm developed an agricultural department with a model livestock and dairy cattle operation and a citrus operation on some 8,000 acres. The tour includes an excellent lunch of curried goat, fried fish, and all the fixings.
