Jamaica Dominates CARIFTA Games Again

On the final day of the 45th CARIFTA Games in Grenada, Jamaica once again dominated the competition by winning a total of 86 medals, equaling the performance of 2015. Jamaica carried away 42 gold, 28 silver, and 16 bronze medals. Of the many outstanding achievements of Jamaica’s athletes, one of the stand-outs was that of Warren Barrett Jr., who broke a five-year record in the Under-20 boys’ shot put. Barrett exceeded the previous record of 19.47 meters twice, with a first throw of 19.83 meters and then a personal best of 19.97 meters. Jamaicans also achieved a sweep of the sprint hurdles gold medals. Rushelle Burton won gold in the Under-20 girls’ event with a time of 13.36 seconds, and Rohan Cole won the Under-20 boys’ gold with 13.71 seconds. Jamaica also took three of the four 800-meter gold medals.
