This week in our “Jamaicans in Business” interview series we feature Urcia Pearson owner of GlamDuo™ . It is an Atlanta-based a full service Wardrobe Consulting and personal shopping firm. Urcia also has a blog “I Am Here For Style” which seeks to help anyone to stay in “style” on a limited budget. Here is our conversation with Urcia Pearson.
Q: Are you a business person or entrepreneur or both?
I’m an Entrepreneur.
Q: What was your profession before you started your business?
Technical Project Manager
Q: Who or what motivated you to go into business?
My love for fashion
Q: Did you face any challenges in mobilizing your capital?
No, other than creating the website and minimal advertising, I didn’t face any challenges. Also, making an income working in Corporate America for so many years was a benefit.
Q: Tell us about your businesses?
I currently have a style blog called I AM HERE FOR STYLE™. It features “how to” videos, behind the scenes event and photo shoots, pop culture commentary, and product reviews. I also co-own a Wardrobe Consulting Firm called GlamDuo™ which provides a full range of services from styling red-carpet events and photo shoots, to finding the perfect dress for a bride and her bridal party.
Q: Many businesses have a moment they call their “big break”, whether it be a news story, a big contract etc. Have you or your business had that “big break” yet?
No, we are still waiting on our big break, God willing it happens soon!
Q: Currently what is your biggest business challenge?
I think the biggest challenge is behind me, that was trying to balance working a 9-5, family, and my business. Now that Corporate America is behind me, I can focus more time and energy into my businesses.
Q: Other than the money what types of satisfaction do you get out of your work?
My work is my passion, and honestly its more of a hobby than it is work. I love to shop and I’m good at it.
Q: What motivates you on a day to day basis?
Knowing that I’m just as good or better than others in my field, that’s motivates me. Also, I don’t want to go back to a 9-5 so I gotta work twice as hard to avoid that from happening lol
Q: How do you motivate people that aren’t close to you and enable them to see your vision?
I tell them sometimes you have to step out on faith, nothing ventured, nothing gained! If you are good at what you do, go for it! Eventually the money will come.
Q: How do you remind yourself of what’s important?
When I see happiness in my kids eyes, at the end of the day…that’s all that matters
Q. What time do you wake up and do you have a routine?
I’m a night owl, always have been. I wake up between 5:30am and 7am, and I go to bed anywhere from 11:30am to 3am. My work ethic is crazy! I can’t go to sleep until I finish whatever it is that I started..and I’m my worse critic!
Q. Do you have any hobbies?
Other than shopping lol, yes. I’m such a home body now. I like hanging out with my husband and the kids, having a family movie night.
Q. If the economy crashed hard and there was no more room for you in the business sector, what would you do with yourself?
I would have to fall back on my IT background.
Q: Seven day, six night, all expense paid, my vacation destination is…
…Bora Bora or Secret Jamaica
Q: My favorite guilty pleasure is…
…Reality TV
Q: My favorite Jamaican food is…
…Laawd I can’t pick just one, oxtail and jerk pork
Q: My favorite Jamaican restaurant is…
…All I can remember is Hot Pot, the food shack cross the street from Immaculate. I used to frequent that!
Q: What advice would you give someone who wants to achieve the same level of success you have?
Nothing will happen overnight, if you really want it, you have to work hard for it.
