Orange Hill Primary School Sports Field Upgraded

The sports field at the Orange Hill Primary School, in Southern St. James, has been upgraded.

It was officially opened by Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and Member of Parliament for South St. James, Hon. Derrick Kellier, on February 5.

Addressing a large group of citizens and students from the school, Mr. Kellier said the field is expected to have a 400-metre running track, a football field as well as a cricket pitch, for the nurturing and development of sporting and athletic talents among the youth of the community.

He urged the youth of Orange Hill School and others to make good use of the field, as the Government’s plan has always been to provide a first class playing facility for the community.

“Sherwood Content community (in Trelawny) was a little unknown place until world sprinter, Usain Bolt, won the first gold medal.  The truth is that Bolt never had a facility like the one we have established for you, so use this and use it well for your own development,” the Minister urged.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Montego Bay and Chairman of the St. James Parish Council, Councillor Glendon Harris, also called on the young persons and students from the community to develop and prepare themselves for the future.

“As we move ahead…it is integral that communities possess the facilities that enable our young people to build inter-personal and social skills, along with the (necessary) sporting discipline,” the Mayor said.

The upgrading project was implemented by the Sugar Company of Jamaica Holdings (SCJH), in association with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
