Photo Highlights – New York Ska Tribute to Saxophonist Roland Alphonso

One of Jamaica’s most popular and enduring art form known as Ska, beat its rhythm and dancing feet into Hank’s Saloon located in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, New York on Friday, January 27, 2017. David Hillyard and the Rocksteady Seven, a ska band, paid tribute to the late, great saxophonist Roland Alphonso. A ska icon, Alphonso played a tremendous role in bands such as, the Skatalites and Soul Brothers, during the prominent era of Ska music. He would have definitely smiled while listening to David Hillyard and the Rocksteady Seven.

These guys came out in full force, ready to entertain the crowd, and giving a heartwarming tribute to Mr. Roland Alphonso O.D., who passed away in 1998. As the crowd moved, danced, and swayed to the quick upbeat sounds of the drums, keyboards, guitars, and sax, his presence could be felt in the Saloon, as the band played such hits as: “Heaven and Earth”, “Four Corners of the World”, and “King of Sax”. Mr. Barry Alphonso, a son of Roland took comfort in knowing that his father’s music still resonates in the hearts and souls of people around the world. It was a tremendous pleasure to see so many people enjoying the music, kicking up their heels, shaking their waistline, and just jazzing it up to sounds of Ska and Rock.
