DANIELA NARDI’S ESPRESSO MANIFESTO series returns with the announcement of Salone di Cultura: Citta’ Aperta (Open City), the fifth edition of a bold initiative by the musician/producer and artistic director, to raise the profile of contemporary Italian-Canadian culture in the 21st Century. Emulating the Italian Salon, the event – taking place on Tuesday, June 23rd at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, and officially part of Italian Heritage Month – celebrates contemporary Italian culture with an evening of culinary, artistic and cultural exploration with Italian-Canadian artists, creators and leading creative thinkers.
The fifth installment, Salone di Cultura: Citta’ Aperta (which means “open city”), will shine a light on the integration of the Italian diaspora into contemporary the Canadian cultural landscape, through the theme of “openness.” There have been many waves of Italians immigrating to Canada, one of them in the 1960s which introduced various aspects of the homeland. But now we’re experiencing a new wave of young professionals who are bringing their passion, expression, craft and identity to the table, all of which are contributing to a new creative class. The event is meant to explore the question, “Has the openness of a country like Canada helped to nurture a new Renaissance?”
The one-of-a-kind Salone di Cultura will open with a classic Italian aperitivo (a light, informal serving of food and drink) prepared by Pugliese chef Massimo Bruno, inspired by the foods of Rome. This will be followed by a musical performance of Daniela Nardi’s Espresso Manifesto, with special guest, jazz trumpeter, composer and improviser Lina Allemano. The artistic part of the evening will also include the shockingly beautiful, bronze creations of sculptor Julie Campagna. The second half of the night offers an interactive, moderated panel, including a cross-section of artistic and cultural directors, broadcasters, politicians and artists to discuss the new emerging Renaissance. This panel will be moderated by the CBC’s Mary Wiens.
The Espresso Manifesto series has become a popular meet-and-greet event for all things Italian and for those interested in promoting the diversity of Canada and our great city of Toronto. To date there have been four editions of the Salone, each more successful than the last.
