Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay, Jamaica, has been named the Caribbean’s best airport by Caribbean Journal in their 2023 Caribbean Travel Awards.
The recognition is one more milestone for the airport, which has steadily built a strong reputation for service, design, and innovation.
“We are very pleased to announce that Sangster International Airport has been named Caribbean Airport of the Year,” said Caribbean Journal Editor-in-Chief Alexander Britell. “The airport has been transformed into one of the region’s leading aviation hubs. From new digital upgrades to enhanced passenger services, it has set a strong example.”
Britell also mentioned the growing appeal of SIA’s amenities. “The addition of the world’s first Bob Marley restaurant and the standout Club MoBay lounge are highlights that elevate the experience for travelers.”
The title from Caribbean Journal is not the only honor Sangster International has received recently. Earlier this year, it was named the Caribbean’s Leading Airport for the 15th consecutive year by the World Travel Awards.
CEO of MBJ Airports Limited, Shane Munroe, expressed appreciation for the back-to-back honors.
“This is an acknowledgment of the consistent hard work of our entire team,” said Munroe. “We are focused on providing excellent service while continuing to upgrade and innovate for the benefit of our passengers. Being recognized again motivates us to do even better.”
MBJ Airports Limited has managed SIA since 2003. Under its leadership, the airport has become a key part of Jamaica’s tourism industry, handling millions of passengers annually and serving as the main gateway to the island’s north coast.
Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett stressed the importance of maintaining a high standard at the airport.
“As Jamaica’s busiest airport and the first and last point of contact for many visitors, the quality of experience at Sangster is crucial,” said Minister Bartlett. “A smooth and pleasant atmosphere helps to shape the perception of our country.”
The World Travel Awards, known for recognizing excellence across the global travel and tourism industry, have been awarding SIA almost continuously since 2005.
Robert Montague, former Minister of Transport, also praised the team behind the airport.
“Sangster International Airport continues to live up to its reputation as the Caribbean’s top airport,” said Montague. “This streak of success is no accident. It’s a result of steady effort and a clear vision.”
Audley Deidrick, President and CEO of the Airports Authority of Jamaica, also applauded MBJ and its staff.
“The 14-year streak during a time of global uncertainty shows how well the airport is run,” said Deidrick. “We are proud of the resilience and dedication shown by everyone at SIA.”
The recognition reflects the airport’s focus on both travelers’ needs and long-term development. With continued investment in technology, safety, and sustainability, Sangster International Airport remains a strong model for Caribbean aviation.
