The 96th anniversary of the birth of Louise “Miss Lou” Bennett Coverley will be celebrated on September 7, 2015. The celebration will begin at National Heroes Park and will include a number of activities. A theater group known as “Respec Miss Lou” will honor Jamaica’s cultural icon by laying Miss Lou’s favorite flowers at her grave, which is located in the park. After this activity, the celebration will move to Gordon Town in St. Andrew where government representatives, leaders of cultural organizations, and students will take an official tour of the home in which Miss Lou lived. There will also be a screening of “Tenky Miss Lou” at the Louise Bennett Garden Theater in St. Andrew in the evening. The film features documentary tributes and performances of the works of Miss Lou in song, poetry and dance.
