Byron Sewell is returning to Hilton Head Island, but he won’t be arriving at North Forest Beach piloting a flats boat or cruising the waters he once fished. Nor will you see him on the beach scanning the waters looking for that perfect set of waves to surf or cast over.
To visit with Byron, you will need to tune in to ESPN2 at 8 a.m. on Feb. 11 and watch the network’s long-running outdoors program “Spanish Fly.” The show is hosted by captain Jose Wejebe, and the addition of Byron to the Sporting Club Guide’s lineup assures you of rod-bending action and breathtaking views.
Byron, Wejebe, fellow captain and guide Martie Doverspike, and captain Rush Maltz journey offshore to the waters of Ambergris Cay. Team with the group and share in the excitement as they probe the flats inshore in search of bonefish. And tag along for spectacular underwater spear-fishing action with South Caicos pro captain Soupee.
An 1,100-acre southern island of the Turks and Caicos chain, Ambergris Cay is located nearly 600 miles from Florida and is now a sanctuary of adventure for one of Hilton Head’s own. You could say the “Surfdog” has reached a point in life envied by many and shared by few. Byron is the Outdoor Pursuit Specialist for the Turks and Caicos Sporting Club in Ambergris Cay.
“One of the many things that I love about Ambergris Cay is that you can experience both epic flats fishing and offshore big game fishing in the same day,” Byron said after a recent trip that included several local anglers. “I had the pleasure of being joined by Trent Malphrus, a professional fisherman and best friend, last week. Trent had an incredible morning fly-fishing session, catching 14 bonefish before 11 a.m.
“After lunch, an all-time crew that included Fuzzy Davis, Martie Doverspike, Raz Reid and Chef Bernie joined us. We went 3-for-5 on Wahoo, including one that was at least 115 pounds, and a few big dolphin. We concluded our day with the freshest sunset sashimi right on the dock. Hope you can join us soon.”
