What Goes Around, The Movie With A Message And A Purpose.

What Goes Around is a bold movie that follows the romantic  relationships of two brothers. It takes us through their triumphs and failures. The tangled webs they weave with the women they love, like or just ‘check for’.

The movie is a dramatic, funny, thought provoking and serious.  Through skillful writing, sometimes all these emotions are present at the same time.  Screen writer Steve McAlpin does a superb job tackling  the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the stereotypes that are pervasive in the Caribbean community. The script is written in a manner that is entertaining, yet straight-forward with its message.

During the screening I attended, the audience was captivated. At  the start of the movie, the crowd was chatty and many (in typical Jamaican fashion), talked back to the screen. But as the stories began to unfold, everyone quieted down and was transfixed by the storyline.

I must commend the cast and crew of this movie. The cinematography was exceptional. Attention grabbing angles are used to capture the audience. During several scenes, I found myself holding my breath in anticipation of what was about to unfold.  The lighting, especially during the nighttime and club scenes was excellent.  There was plenty of  background  lighting, and the audience wasn’t subject to those sections of black screen that all too often are part of  Caribbean movies.

The acting was powerful enough to evoke strong emotions from the crowd. We laughed out loud when they gave us jokes. We gasped when they shocked us, and we sighed when they filled out hearts with grief.  Lead characters Sylvester – Flippa Maffia; the confirmed bachelor and player for life, and Denzel – Nohard Grant, the hopeless romantic, charmed us with their contrasting styles.  Leading ladies Sakina Samuda  and Kim Goss had us hanging on the edge of our seats wondering what would come next.

Many thanks to Steve McAlpin and Johnny Blacks for developing this movie and delivering a message that needs to be heard.   They both deserve community service awards for their work on this film.

Excellent movie. Put this on your must see list.
