On Saturday December 10th, 2016, the Jamaica College Old Boys Association of Florida held their Awards Breakfast in Miramar, Florida. Dr. the Hon R. Danny Williams OJ, CD, Hon. LLD, JP, the Jamaica College Foundation president, was the main honoree as he is retiring from the position at the end of 2016. Dr. Donald Dixon, Louis Hoyes, Hugh “Ossie” Osborne , Ricky A. McCalla and Dr. Scott Hamilton were the other notable JCOBAFL members who were honored at the breakfast.
Jamaica Consul General to Miami and Jamaica College old boy, Franz Hall, brought greeting to JCOBAFL members. He emphasized the important role all Jamaican alumni organizations play in giving back to the island.
Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam welcomed the JCOBAFL members to the city of Miramar. During his welcome, the mayor spoke of the many accomplishments and accolades of honoree, Dr. the Hon R. Danny Williams OJ, CD, Hon. LLD, JP.
JCOBFL president Xavier Murphy gave personal and professional reflections about working with Mr. Williams and the JC Foundation to assist the school. Xavier delineated for the audience the security features of the process Mr. Williams and the JC Foundation created to assure transparency and accountability of all donations.
Judge Norman Hemming, a JCOBAFL executive board member, read a special proclamation that was presented to Mr. Williams at the beginning of the breakfast.
“I want to make someone abundantly clear, I have been a vehicle through which things happen, but I really want to say thank you to all the Jamaica College old boys, their associates, and wives who have made what has happened at JC possible,” said Danny Williams in his opening remarks. He then went on to discuss the disrepair of the Jamaica College campus when the honoree assumed the mantle as chairman of the foundation and how he worked collaboratively with the Board and Administrative team to transform the school. Mr. Williams closed his remarks with an appeal to the JC old boys to support the Scotland roof repair project which would be his last project as chairman.
Each of the six honoree was presented with a custom Jamaica College scarf and a Griffin, symbolic of guardians of a treasured possession and a prominent emblem on the Jamaica College crest.
All the honorees spoke passionately of their love for Jamaica College and the need to give back to the alma mater.
The JCOBAFL and JCOBANY presented Mr, Williams with donation checks for the Jamaica College Foundation.
The event was held at Roun of Goosey, fine dining Jamaican restaurant in Miramar, Florida.
