A motor vehicle assembly facility is slated for construction in Spanish Town. Spurred by investments totaling US$350 million, the plant is expected to create some 10,000 jobs within three years. The project results from the partnering of Gulfray Americas and China National Automotive Industry International Corporation (CNAICO), which is a subsidiary of China National Machinery Industry Corporation. According to Martin Scott, Gulfray Americas’ managing director, Jamaican workers will see many jobs created by the facility, and these will be “high-level, good-paying” jobs. The Spanish Town Free Zone will be constructed in the coming two to three years during Phase One of a two-phase project. The designated free-zone operator will be Masada Jamaica Ltd., which was created by a consortium of domestic and international investors.
