Jamaican Olympic champion Usain Bolt has scheduled his first 100-meter race for 2016 at the Cayman Invitational on May 14. He has not competed in a 100-meter event since August 23, 2015, at the Cayman Invitational. If Bolt fails to race in another distance competition before May 14, it will be his latest start in an Olympic season in the past four cycles. In 2012, Bolt made his debut in a 4×100 relay in Kingston and competed in an individual event on May 5, 2012. In August of 2015, Bolt took first place in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4×100 meters relay at the Worlds. As he contemplates his final appearance at the Olympic Games, Bolt faces a challenge from Justin Gatlin, who lost in the Worlds 100-meters final by just 0.01 seconds and ran the fastest 100-meter time of the day in the semifinals.
