Seventeen-year-old viola player Jordon Crawford is currently a student at Kingston College, but come September 2016, he will be traveling to Freiburg, Germany, on a full scholarship to the Robert Bosch campus of United World College (UWC), He was one of three students to win the scholarship from a group of 50 applicants. Crawford will be pursuing a two-year international baccalaureate degree, saying he has “this love and this passion” for music and no doubts that it is his calling. He is the principal violist with the National Youth Orchestra (NYOJ) in Jamaica. He was just a baby when his father Wilvin Crawford introduced him to the joys of music. He also cites the NYOJ as a “saving grace” for him; one of the goals of the social intervention program that focuses on at-risk students is to change their attitudes using music. Crawford became the first student instructor of the NYOJ at the age of 16 and now teaches classes at Windward Road Primary and Junior High School. He credits his mother and his deep Christian faith as the driving forces in his life.
