Jamaica’s roots reggae artiste Jah Cure has taken the top spot on Billboard’s Reggae Chart for his album “The Cure”. The album has been listed on the charts for 37 weeks, but this is the second time it has been ranked Number 1 since its August 2015 release. The album’s success has sparked hope among other Caribbean artistes who are looking to succeed with overseas audiences. The reggae charts at Billboard have lately been dominated by musicians from regions other than the Caribbean. Ranking second to Jah Cure is Stick Figure, a band based in California, and Joss Stone of Britain is in third place. The only other Caribbean artiste on Billboard’s top five reggae list is Jamaica’s dancehall star Alkaline, but the rise of Jah Cure indicates that it remains possible for Caribbean stars to receive recognition internationally. The top ranking of Jah Cure comes at a time of debate about artistes from the Caribbean experiencing a shut-out in the American market in spite of the popularity of dancehall and reggae there.
