The Jamaican Diaspora is set to celebrate 54 years of national independence, and the Atlanta Jamaican Association plans to recognize the occasion by presenting six scholarships to college and high school students in Jamaica. The wife of Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Mrs. Juliet Holness, will visit the Association between August 12 and 15, 2016, and will make the keynote speech at the organization’s Independence Ball. The scholarships will be awarded at the event, which is considered the premier occasion celebrating independence with more than 400 patrons expected to attend. Mrs. Holness and her accompanying delegation will participate in several events during the visit, including a courtesy call on the mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Read. The scholarships will be presented to high school and college students currently in Jamaica or to those of Jamaican parentage. The scholarships represent a way for the organization to give back to the community.
