The Bluefield Bay Resort in Westmorland Jamaica made history when they opened their very own lawn bowls green on 22nd December. The history was made because their green is the first green in Jamaica and probably the Caribbean. The sun came out to welcome Caribbean bowls tour’s Andrew Newell and fellow Jamaican and ReggaeRollers team mate Walter Williams that explained the game and demonstrated how to play the sport to the locals which came out to try this sport for the first time on Jamaican soil. The event was covered by TVJ the biggest TV channel in Jamaica along with interviews with Andrew and locals to get an idea on how they feel about the possibility of this sport developing in Jamaica.
The Bluefield Bay Resort partnered with The Caribbean Bowls Tour has already invited local schools to use the green in the hope it will help develop the sport with the younger age range.
The overall project will take time but we are definitely moving in the right direction to develop the sport in Jamaica and towards getting Jamaica closer to competing in the commonwealth games and other official events, said Andrew Newell “I am also hoping to use the green to create a new kind of tourism in Jamaica, the lawn bowls green will now encourage the lawn bowlers to spend their bowls holidays in Jamaica other than Spain, South Africa, Cyprus and Portugal. Andrew is planning to bring the Jamaican lawn bowls team nick named the ReggaeRollers to Jamaica for the first time to compete before the end of the year.
