Saveur magazine, which focuses on food and food travel, has awarded Jamaica its 2015 Good Taste Award in the “Transforming Foodways” category. The award reflects Jamaica’s efforts to encourage islanders to eat local foods. Jamaicans take great pride in their food traditions, and yet, in recent years, they have moved away from eating local produce, favoring the increasingly plentiful food imports that are often cheaper. Efforts by Jamaicans like Chris Blackwell, well known music executive and founder of Island Records, are meant to highlight the unique excellence of Jamaican cuisine and encourage greater local appreciation for native foods like black mango, callaloo, coconut and scotch bonnet peppers.
